Fall Lawn Care Guide for Ontario Homeowners
Fall is the most important season for lawn care in Ontario. What you do between September and freeze-up determines how well your lawn recovers in spring.
Why Fall Is Critical
- Soil is still warm but air is cooling, ideal for grass root development
- Reduced weed competition
- Moisture from fall rain reduces irrigation needs
- Recovery time before harsh winter stress
Fall Lawn Care Checklist
1. Core Aeration (September–October)
Compacted soil limits root depth and water infiltration. Core aeration pulls plugs from the soil, opening channels for air, water and fertilizer. Best done in early fall when the lawn can recover quickly.
2. Overseeding
After aeration is the ideal time to overseed thin or bare areas. Seed-to-soil contact is excellent after aeration, and fall temperatures support germination without summer heat stress.
Recommended for Ontario: Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, or fine fescue blends suited to the region's climate.
3. Final Mowing Height
Don't cut the lawn too short going into winter. Final cut should be at 2.5–3 inches. Grass that's too long can mat and promote snow mould; grass that's too short has less energy reserve for winter.
4. Fall Fertilizer
A slow-release fall fertilizer (low nitrogen, higher potassium) applied in late September or October feeds roots rather than shoots and improves winter hardiness. Timing matters. Too early and you encourage growth that won't harden off.
5. Leaf Management
Leave a heavy layer of leaves on the lawn for extended periods and you'll get snow mould and dead patches in spring. Mulch-mow light leaf cover; rake or remove heavy accumulations.
6. Irrigation
Continue watering until freeze-up. Dry soil going into winter stresses turf. A deep watering before the ground freezes improves winter survival.
When to Call a Professional
